Core Competencies: Community relations
G1 - Articulating organizational purpose and advocate publicly for the needs and priorities of students, families and the community
G2 - Demonstrate the ability to engage the extended community G3 - Effectively generate and respond to various forms of communication through media G4 - Promote a positive image of schools and the school district G5 - Monitor and address perceptions about school community issues G6 - Demonstrate a community-centric perspective and the ability to identify and articulate critical community issues that may impact local education ArtifactsReflectionMany of the artifacts listed under communication are the ones I listed for this competency, community relations. These two competencies go hand-in-hand. Through my practicum and prior roles on various committees, I have been a part of building and working toward a shared mission, vision, and core values of two districts. This process was completed with all stakeholders including the community. Being a part of strategic planning provided me with insights on what the community desires when it comes to educating our children. This empowered me, along with other teachers and leaders, to continuously advocate for the needs of all students, parents, and the community. Our strategic plan is something the Minnewaska Momentum Program, Technology Committee, and Building Leadership Team utilizes to guide our decisions. We also use the action steps for change infographic to guide each step we take in this Momentum Program to ensure we can make sustainable actions. A key element to these steps is including all stakeholders and connecting with the community.
I am very passionate about the power of technology including its use as a platform to tell a district's story and communicate with our stakeholders. I have included two flyers that I have made using Canva and posted on our school's Facebook page which I monitor part-time for the district. I have also embedded our school's Twitter page that I also manage. Using a plethora of communication avenues allows schools to monitor and address perceptions about the school and potential issues. If schools don't tell their stories, someone else will. |
