Reflection
As a Social Studies teacher, helping students become caring, informed citizens is something I am very passionate about. A few years ago, our district began a program called Day of Caring; a one-day event where all students help with community projects. It is important for students to give back to the community that helps our school be successful. By students investing time into their communities, they learn what it means to collaborate for the greater good of society. It also teaches them the work and organization that goes into keeping our communities nice and clean. I have also included community-based projects the National Honor Society organizes and leads: Red Cross Blood Drives and the school's Veterans Day Program. These projects also show how leaders can balance community demands with the best interest of learners.
The presentation included in the artifacts are lessons that are used during Laker Time which is our school's advisory program. Our advisory program serves as a way to meet college and career readiness expectations set forth by the state. This demonstrates my understanding that education provides many services to students in a democratic society and what is taught in schools is dictated by the state and federal government, but schools must also adhere to the desires of the local communities.
